SALT LAKE CITY — Residents near Ogden Regional Medical Center said they are  shocked that the hospital cut down the dozens of trees that separated homes from the hospital property.

Now, they have bright hospital lights shining into their windows, and the noise from helicopters and ambulances. Brent Hart told KSL that for 30 years he’s had a backyard lined by beautiful trees. Until now.

“Yeah, it was devastating to us,” he said. “There was a lot of wildlife back there.”

It wasn’t a decision the hospital made on their own. Washington Terrace City required the medical center to cut back dead branches and underbrush because a fire in 2025 on the south end of the hospital property had prompted some concerns.

City Manager Tom Hanson said the area where the trees were cut down is the hospital’s property and that it has the right to conduct any fire mitigation.

But he maintains the hospital wasn’t told to cut all the trees.

“Simply to clear out underbrush and clean up their properties so that they mitigate any fire hazard,” Hanson said. “We said, ‘trim up your trees,’ but we didn’t say ‘remove your trees.'”

In January, a new law went into effect in Utah. HB48, Wildland Urban Interface Modifications,

Ogden Regional has not responded to a request for comment from KSL.
