SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall will join other leaders from around the city and state Tuesday morning for the raising of the Juneteenth flag at City Hall.

The ceremony will be held at the flagpole on the east side of the Salt Lake City and County Building at 11 a.m.

In addition to Mendenhall, Salt Lake City Council Chair Dan Dugan, Betty Sawyer, committee member for the Utah Juneteenth Festival and State Representative Sandra Hollins are expected to attend.

Juneteenth recognizes the date of June 19, 1865, as the date that news of the end of slavery reached slaves in Texas and other states in the southwest.
