UHP trooper hospitalized after being hit by wrong-way driver on I-15

SALT LAKE CITY — For the 29th time in Utah this year, safety officials had to stop a driver going the wrong way on a public road. This time, a Utah Highway Patrol Trooper was hospitalized briefly after his vehicle was hit by the driver.

Early on Sunday morning, Trooper Devin Henson was among other troopers responding to calls of a wrong-way driver near 600 South and northbound I-15 in Salt Lake City.

Officials said that Henson found the car driving southbound on northbound I-15 near 4500 South. The driver reportedly tried to swerve around Henson’s patrol car, but instead, the front of the trooper’s patrol car made contact with the driver’s side of the SUV being driven by the wrong-way driver.

Henson received minor injuries according to the Utah Department of Public Safety and was treated and released from the hospital.

The driver who was driving the wrong way on I-15 was treated at the scene for injuries he sustained in the crash, and then arrested and booked into jail for suspected DUI.

Word of the trooper’s actions spread quickly and was recognized on Gov. Spencer’s Cox’s personal Twitter account as well as by the Commissioner of the Utah Department of Public Safety, Jess Anderson.
