EDEN, Utah — With the establishment of a new open-air museum, art installations will arrive at Powder Mountain.

The installations will feature work from several renowned artists including James Turrell, Nancy Holt, Jenny Holzer, and Paul McCarthy. Additional artists will be announced “in the coming months,” according to a statement from Powder Mountain.

“At Powder [Mountain], we want every experience —from the ski resort to the residential community to the outdoor art museum—to be intentional, and the integration of art into the mountain is a manifestation of that consideration,” said Powder Mountain Chairman Reed Hastings.

According to a press release, the art installations will include sculptures and land art “throughout skiable terrain and beyond.”

“The curatorial vision is rooted in the intentional integration of art into the landscape and the seasonal rhythms of the mountain, drawing deep connections to the legacy and enduring influence of the historical land art projects of the American West,” said Matthew Thompson, the project’s curator. “We want to empower a diverse and intergenerational range of artists to create ambitious experiences in the landscape that broaden the story of land art and expand its possibilities.”

Powder Mountain said that the displays will be open year-round. During the summer and fall, they will be accessible for free via hiking and biking.

When ski season rolls around, they will be accessible by purchasing a lift ticket or season pass.

The art installations will be a mix of commissioned works and permanently acquired pieces, per the press release. Installation will happen over the next two years.

The new art program’s grand opening will not happen until 2026.
