The Salt Lake Film Society to renovate nearly 100-year old Tower Theatre

SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Film Society announced it has plans to renovate the nearly 100-year old Tower Theatre.
The Tower Theatre was built in 1928 but closed 5-years ago. Now The Salt Lake Film Society has presented preliminary drawings to the Salt Lake City Building Services to re-imagine the space.
The Society says the goal is for the Tower Theatre to serve as a community-based, mission-driven anchor for the 9th & 9th neighborhood. The Society plans on the theatre being a cinematic museum, be a leader in environmental responsibility and be the host of unique film screenings, cultural and environmental films, Q&As and panel discussions, and curated programming.
The news release shows a concept calling for solar panels on the roof and a new second floor above the main theater, which originally sat 380-people about a century ago.
The plan would also reconstruct the castle-like facade the building originally had. The film society also wants to add a basement and elevator.
The film society says those plans are still in the early stages and may not be the final designs.
According to the The Salt Lake Film Society’s website the project is currently in the schematic design/capital campaign build phase, scheduled to run through 2026.
However, the only timeline listed is to ‘hopefully’ be done by their 100-year anniversary in 2028.
