SALT LAKE CITY — The Sundance Film Festival released its program guide for the upcoming 2025 festival. Sundance’s Senior Programmer John Nein said there are some local artists in the mix of 87 films and 6 series.
“Filmmaker Cole Welby, he went to BYU as an [undergraduate]. He has directed a film that we’re showing in the festival called ‘Omaha.'”
Nein said the overall theme for this festival is resilience and overcoming difficult times. For example, the movie “Omaha” is about a man moving his family across the country after the foreclosure of his home.
Nein said many well-known artists whose films will be playing at this festival got their start at the Sundance Labs in Utah. For example, Justin Lin, who directed “Star Trek Beyond,” got his start at Sundance years ago. But he has returned because of his love for independent movies.
“We talk about films that are shot in Utah, but when I talk about the labs, the labs take place in Utah for well over 40 years,” said Nein. “So some of these projects were developed in Utah.”
The 2025 festival has something for everyone: dramas, documentaries, foreign films and episodic series. You can watch the Film Festival in person in January or online.
