TOOELE, Utah — One man is facing charges after he barricaded himself inside a Tooele home Thursday night.

According to Sgt. David Bleazard of the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office, police initially received a call about a domestic situation involving a 37-year-old man and his girlfriend.

Sheriff Paul Wimmer said police tried to negotiate with Nikolai Cottrell before deploying tear gas into the home to force him to surrender.

“After a while and it was clear he wasn’t going to cooperate. We then deployed tear gas munitions into the home, and he gave up after that,” said Wimmer.

Cottrell’s wife and children had fled the house. They were shaken up but in good condition.

“He got booked in on domestic assault, intoxication, resisting arrest, criminal mischief and domestic violence in the presence of a child,” said Wimmer.

Charges will be referred to the Tooele County district attorney for any prosecution.
