WEST JORDAN, Utah — The West Jordan Police Department has provided more information about what lead to a house explosion, and subsequently the deaths of four people on July 18.
On that day, a home exploded and started burning near 8300 South and 6430 West, in West Jordan. Three people were later found dead inside the home. West Jordan police said these were an adult male, an adult female, and a juvenile male. A juvenile female died from her injuries after she was transported to University of Utah Hospital.
In a press release, police said that a juvenile female, one of the residents of the home, told them she believed her father was the person that caused the fire.
“The evidence collected corroborates those statements made by the juvenile,” West Jordan police said.
“Investigators found a gas can in the immediate vicinity of the father,” police said, “and responders reported a strong odor of gasoline throughout the residence even after the fire was extinguished.
Police also said they believe the father called his employer on the day of the fire, to say he’d be late for work. Police said the father had also “sold belongings starting a few days prior, leading up to this incident.”
West Jordan Police also said that after viewing a neighbor’s security camera they saw the father “pacing outside the residence a few minutes before an explosion was heard.”
Police have previously said they believed all of the people who died were members of the same family. Their identities have not yet been released.
