Officials identify woman who died near Horsetail Falls

ALPINE, Utah — The Utah County Sheriff’s Office has identified the hiker who died near Horsetail Falls on Friday. Officials believe 19-year-old Cynthia Ann Grimwood from Springville, Utah died after getting swept away in a river.
According to Sgt. Spencer Cannon with the UCSO, video on Grimwood’s phone indicated that she was in the area around Horsetail Falls with her dog to enjoy the outdoors.
Grimwood was reported missing on Friday. Cannon said that two hikers came across Grimwood’s dog and belongings that afternoon.
Cannon previously said that the dog was returned to Grimwood’s family after its discovery.
Authorities found Grimwood’s body the night she was reported missing but couldn’t recover it until Saturday due to safety concerns.
Concerns about water safety
A day after Grimwood’s death, a 12-year-old boy was swept into Provo River near Bridal Veil Falls.
Though the boy was rescued, he died shortly after.
Officials reported that the boy spent 30 minutes in the water, having been swept downstream about 4 miles.
The two deaths prompted reminders from the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation’s chief of law enforcement about the dangers of bodies of water.
