Payson Junior High School student in custody after bringing gun to school

PAYSON, Utah — One Payson Junior High School student is in police custody after bringing a gun to class. 

In a post on Facebook, Kevin Mecham, the principal of Payson Junior High School, wrote that students reported that one of their peers had a gun on school grounds. School administrators worked with a resource officer to quickly locate the student. 

The gun was taken away and secured and nobody was harmed. 

“While these types of incidents can be concerning, there is no longer a threat posed to students or staff,” wrote Mecham. 

Additionally, no related threats were made to the school. 

Law enforcement is investigating the situation; however, no further details will be released due to privacy laws that protect minors. 

Seth Sorenson, the public relations specialist for Nebo School District, said that “Nebo School District and Law Enforcement remain committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all students.” 

Mecham thanked his students for reporting the incident.
