Man dies in West Jordan SWAT standoff that triggered shelter-in-place

WEST JORDAN — A man was killed Tuesday after a domestic violence call turned into a SWAT standoff in West Jordan, triggering a shelter-in-place in the area.
According to the West Jordan Police Department, the shelter-in-place was near Executive Drive.
Ramon Ramirez with the WJPD said police got a report of an argument involving multiple people and one of them had a firearm. Due to the weapon, a SWAT team responded to the scene.
Police safely got four individuals out of the house, while the suspect and one other person remained inside.
After attempts to negotiate with the suspect, police obtained a search warrant for the property. They went into the home, searching for the suspect, eventually making contact with him.
Following this, police tried to get the suspect to leave the house. Shots were fired, killing him.
According to police, officers with WJPD were familiar with the home and had been called out to it before. WJPD Deputy Chief Jeremy Robertson said his officers sympathize with the community involved.
“We feel for the residents in the area. It’s never comfortable for them to have this happen in their neighborhood, and we tried everything we possibly could to make sure that didn’t happen while trying to keep everybody safe,” he said.
The shelter-in-place was lifted in the neighborhood shortly after the shots rang out.
Police had not provided the man’s identity as of Wednesday morning. The Unified Police Department took over the investigation after the shots were fired.
