TAYLORSVILLE — A high-speed police chase ended in a chaotic situation with troopers in Taylorsville Wednesday night. One officer suffered minor injuries, and a suspect has been arrested.

Sometime before 8 p.m., the police pursuit began in the south part of Salt Lake County, according to Lt. Cameron Roden with the Utah Highway Patrol.

“Troopers attempted to stop a vehicle at very high rate of speed (in) the south part of (the) Salt Lake County area. That vehicle fled southbound on I-15 where it went westbound on I-215. The vehicle exited at Redwood Road and troopers terminated the pursuit,” said Lt. Cameron Roden with UHP.

According to Major Jeff Nigbur with UHP, troopers then tracked the plate to a residence in Taylorsville. As troopers arrived and made contact with the residents, shots were fired from within the home.

Nigbur said troopers did not fire but retreated and secured the area.

The suspect, an adult male, attempted to flee the scene in a vehicle, but police rammed the car and stopped the suspect. An officer was taken to the hospital for minor injuries after ramming the car.

The suspect was taken into custody.

The roads surrounding the residence are closed and may be closed for several hours due to the investigation. Officers are working to clear the residence.

“(The) vehicle fled southbound on (Interstate 15) where it went westbound on (Interstate-215),” he said. “The vehicle exited at Redwood Road and troopers terminated the pursuit.”

Major Jeff Nigbur with UHP said troopers then tracked the plate to a residence in Taylorsville near 6200 South and 2200 West. As they arrived and attempted to make contact with the residents at the house, shots were fired from inside the home.

Nigbur said troopers did not fire but retreated and secured the area.

The man suspected of both leading them on the chase and firing the shots then tried to get back in his car and drive away. But before he could, a Taylorsville police officer rammed the car to stop him.

A neighbor recounted the moments law enforcement arrived, saying it was a situation that escalated quickly.

“Oh I was completely scared,” the neighbor said. “I mean, you know, three cop cars came rolling down — that’s nothing really, too scary — but then three turned into six, six turned into 10, and that’s when I really started getting worried.”

Both the officer and the man were taken to the hospital for minor injuries after the car was rammed. Police said after the man is cleared by medical teams, he’ll be taken to jail.

The roads surrounding the residence were closed for several hours due to the investigation. KSL TV went back out to the scene Thursday morning — the suspect’s car was sitting in the middle of the residence’s yard, extensively damaged.
