Draper won’t build a “homeless camp” as claimed on protest sign

DRAPER, Utah — A protest sign on the corner of 11400 South and State Street in Draper is raising eyebrows.

The protest sign has been in Draper there since last year. It reads “Future Draper City homeless camp, thanks to Draper City ineptitude.” The sign’s presence is confusing to Draper City spokesperson Linda Peterson.

“We’re not sure why the sign has stayed on the property,” Peterson told KSL NewsRadio, “since the site plan has been approved. But we have not heard back from the applicant as far as moving forward with the development.”

Draper City has approved the developer’s plan

A developer wants to build a corporate office building on the site, and has until December 7, 2024, to file for a land disturbance approval. In Draper City, a land disturbance permit must be obtained by a developer to ensure that a construction site is revegetated after construction work like clearing and excavating.

Peterson said the sign is a protest by the developer, who was asked by the city for more details on their application to develop the property.

“When he initially submitted the application it was not approved, because of the need for the changes. So it was returned to him with that request, for the changes to be made. And then it was resubmitted and approved.”

The developer wants to build a corporate office building. They’ve made the changes the city requested, and their application has been approved.
