Draper, Utah — Construction has officially begun on the expansion of Porter Rockwell Boulevard. Paving the next chapter of the former prison site.
Plans for new housing and commercial development are in store for the former Draper prison site just west of I-15.
On Tuesday, state officials and key figures behind The Point project gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking.
There Michael Ambre, Executive Director of The Point, announced that the first phase, which spans 100 acres, is now underway, and construction kicked off immediately.
“I would expect a 30-year timeline. We have about a 15-year timeline on phase one, we’re hoping to improve on that,” said Ambre.
Ambre said that this will become another main connector from North to South that’s greatly needed by the community right now.
Ambre also said local residents can look forward to more outdoor recreation in the future.
“We are also building a section of river to Range Park as well, so there’ll be a lot of outdoor opportunities in that park and there will be bike paths and walking paths,” said Ambre.
Ambre explained that the initial phase will focus on high-density apartment buildings. Additional housing options are slated for the second phase.
