SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah company is stepping up to help people get a safe ride home during the holidays, just as law enforcement begins extra shifts to crack down on impaired drivers.
Utah Highway Patrol Col. Michael Rapich said it’s key to plan your night out. This ensures you have a safe ride. He said the first thing to go after you drink is good decision-making.
“Make a good decision on the front end, before you have the opportunity to have impairment affect your ability,” said Rapich.
People without designated drivers are encouraged to take advantage of a promotion aimed at getting them home.
Utah-based WCF Insurance is sponsoring a promotion giving $10 off an Uber ride between now and the New Year.
According to Rapich, 50 people have died in crashes involving alcohol in Utah this year. That’s three more than last year with a few weeks left in the holiday season.
“There’s absolutely no reason that if your evening is involving drinking that you need to get behind the wheel and drive,” he said.
Rapich said law enforcement will be working more than 240 extra overtime shifts to specifically find and stop impaired drivers.
“We’re going to have officers out there … Highway Patrol troopers, local officers, county deputies across the state making sure [impaired drivers] don’t have the opportunity to cause a tragedy and hurt someone else.”
