USU in ‘substantial compliance’ after yearslong Title IX concerns, Department of Justice says

SALT LAKE CITY — The Department of Justice said Utah State University has taken some of the necessary steps to address yearslong Title IX concerns on its campus.
Getting to Title IX compliance is something the university has been working to address for more than five years. The DOJ entered into a settlement with the university in 2020 after it found system-wide failures in how the school handled reports of sexual assault.
The university was told last year that it was still not in compliance with the agreement terms, but now the DOJ said it has demonstrated substantial compliance with a number of the terms.
Work on USU Title IX compliance still underway
School administrators said they are still working to address the DOJ’s terms related to their relationship with law enforcement and educational climate issues.
“(They’re) now in better compliance. (They’ve) set up the offices and are training students in ways that we think are appropriate. There’s still a little bit more to do,” KSL legal analyst Greg Skordas said.
However, Skordas noted that USU still has work to do.
“The Department of Justice hasn’t entirely released them from this investigation. They’ve just relaxed the investigation.”
A university spokesperson said they don’t have a concrete timeline for when the school will be in full compliance, but they’re near the end of the agreement period.
