Officer-involved shooting kills one in Hurricane

HURRICANE, Utah — An officer-involved shooting on Monday evening left one dead and critically injured a police K-9.
According to a statement released by Hurricane City Police, officers were called at 7:22 p.m. on Dec. 26.
Police found a male that claimed he was being threatened. The suspect started yelling in Spanish and drove his car at the officers. The suspect fled and a short pursuit ensued.
According to the release, the suspect was spotted driving very slowly and erratically and caused a traffic accident with another car. The accident caused substantial damage to both vehicles and the suspect’s car went off the road before coming to a stop.
When officers approached, the suspect was no longer in the vehicle.
A short time later, police were dispatched to a home in the area of 2460 West and 250 North. The resident said a man in his mid-forties walked into their home.
Officers entered the home and it was reported that shots had been fired. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and a police K-9 was critically injured according to the release.
The police dog suffered stab wounds in the neck and was transported to Las Vegas for emergency care.
The suspect’s name is not being released until family members are notified.
According to the statement, the shooting is being investigated by the Washington County Critical Incident Task Force and involves officers from the Hurricane City Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
