KANE COUNTY, Utah — Spiked tires, a lost trailer, a stolen car, and a man covered in mud. All of these are aspects of a police chase that happened in southern Utah and northern Arizona early Wednesday morning.

Around 2 a.m., Kane County Sheriff’s Dispatch received a call about a possible burglary. The report came from a property owner who had noticed suspicious activity in his neighbor’s cabin.

According to the police report, the perpetrators were confronted and fled in a Jeep, towing an ATV.

The person who reported the incident followed them toward Highway 89, where the ATV trailer disconnected on a bumpy dirt road.

Deputies from Kane and Garfield counties responded, but they did not come across the Jeep.

The Kane County deputy retrieved the ATV and was returning to Kanab when the Jeep was spotted.

The deputy initiated a pursuit through Kanab, during which the Jeep reached speeds exceeding 90 mph.

Around 7 a.m., deputies deployed spikes near the Arizona border. However, the Jeep turned onto a side road in Kanab and was later found abandoned at the edge of Kanab Creek.

Deputies then pursued the suspect on foot.

The Kane County Sheriff’s SWAT team, along with police officers from Kanab City, Utah Highway Patrol Troopers, and a BLM Ranger, quickly joined the search. The Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter was also promptly requested. The helicopter quickly arrived from Cedar City to provide air support.

A homeowner on the West side of Kanab Creek informed an officer that he had seen a mud-covered man, matching the suspect’s description, passing through the area around 7 a.m.

Police chase goes to Arizona

As law enforcement continued searching the vicinity, Kane County Sheriff’s Dispatch received a call from a homeowner a few blocks away, reporting the theft of their car.

The individual mentioned receiving a notification from their credit card company that notified him of a transaction at a Walmart in Page, Arizona. When he went to retrieve their wallet from the car, he discovered the vehicle missing.

Kane County deputies immediately contacted the Page Police Department. An officer from Page quickly located and stopped the stolen car.

Officers in Page took 34-year-old Kyle Lang Turner from Joseph, Utah, into custody. He was later booked into jail.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the case.

They expressed gratitude towards the various law enforcement partners involved in this police chase. They also credited the successful collaboration between agencies in southern Utah and northern Arizona.
