SLC crime rates drop as theft increases nationwide

SALT LAKE CITY— Stores in certain areas of the country are closing their doors due to a jump in organized crime and theft. In Salt Lake City, however, robbery and theft rates are decreasing.
Major retailer Target announced it is closing nine stores in four different states, saying its workers and customers are threatened by theft and organized crime.
Target’s CEO says thefts involving violence or threats of violence went up 120 percent in the first five months of this year, according to Insider.
Here in Salt Lake, that hasn’t been an issue.
According to citywide data from the Salt Lake City Police Department:
- Business robbery has decreased by 16.4% compared to this time last year.
- All other robbery has decreased by 14.3% compared to this time last year.
- Business robbery has decreased by 30.7% compared to the 5-year average for this time of the year.
- All other robbery has decreased by 11.0% compared to the 5-year average for this time of the year.
So far this year, there has been a total of just over 9,700 property and violent crimes committed. Totaling a decrease of nearly 2,000 violent and property crimes from 2022.
