Two arrested in connection to Mt. Olympus trailhead shooting

Two 16-year-olds were riding on the hood of a vehicle in the Terra Academy Charter School parking lot, according to a Facebook post from the Vernal Police Department. SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office said two people were arrested in connection to a shooting at Holladay’s Mt. Olympus Trailhead. 

The shooting happened on August 3.

A press release from the sheriff’s office identified the suspects as a 15-year-old male and 20-year-old Mateo Martinez. They are both confirmed gang members.

“This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gang violence,” said Sheriff Rosie Rivera. “We are committed to ensuring that those responsible for this senseless act are brought to justice.” 

Both suspects could face homicide charges. 

Mt. Olympus trailhead shooting

Police responded to the scene at around 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 3 according to a press release. There had been reports of gunfire at the Mt. Olympus trailhead. 

When police arrived, the victim was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. They identified him as 18-year-old Naod Welday. The wounds proved to be fatal. 

Two friends were with Welday. Per the press release, one of them had been assaulted. None of the victims are associated with gang activity. 

Police continue to investigate the incident. The Salt Lake County Sheriff’s office asked those with additional information to call (801) 840-4000. 

“The Sheriff’s Office, including the Metro Gang Unit, will continue to work tirelessly to combat gang violence and protect our community,” said Rivera.
