SALT LAKE CITY — On Monday, several Davis High School students had only 30 minutes left with their AP Calculus exam when a fire alarm went off.

“The cause of the alarm was due to a balloon that interfered with the connection of a beam detector,” said Christopher Williams, spokesperson with the Davis School District. “We have pretty sensitive alarm systems, and according to state law, any time an alarm goes off, all occupants of a school must evacuate.”

All students had to exit the building for about 20 minutes while the Kaysville Fire Department investigated.

An email to parents explained that the Davis High School assistant principal immediately contacted the College Board to see what could be done.

According to CollegeBoard policies, the students have three options:

1. Score the Exam “As Is”: Students may choose to have their exam submitted and scored based on the portion completed prior to the evacuation. Please note that there will be no adjustment made for the loss of testing time. The exam will be evaluated in the same manner as all AP Calculus exams administered worldwide.”

2. Take the Exam on the Late Testing Date:Students may retake the AP Calculus exam using the College Board’s alternate version on Thursday, May 22 at 12:00 PM.”

3. Take the Exam on an Exception Testing Date: Due to the conflict with graduation events, Davis High has received approval to offer an additional testing session on Wednesday, May 28 at 8:00 AM.”

The College Board’s alternate test date is the same day as the Davis High graduation ceremony.

The school said that for those who choose to retake the test on May 22, they will coordinate “an alternate graduation ceremony for those students and their families.”

KSL also received emails from concerned parents who will be out of town on graduation trips during the additional testing session, leaving children to decide between walking at graduation with friends or submitting the test as-is.

For those with concerns, the College Board said to call 888-225-5427.
