SALT LAKE CITY — Before the end of the month the Jordan School District’s new Jordan Learning Center will open to the public.

Officials said the Jordan Learning Center will house four programs including a child development center, a virtual academy for online learning, a credit center where students can show competency to earn credit, and the Jordan Education Foundation which is the Jordan School District’s fundraising organization.

“It’s the whole span of students that can benefit from this facility,” said Jordan District Superintendent Anthony Godfrey. And receiving the services will be easier, he said, because they’re housed under the same roof.

The building was a Walmart before the district purchased it a couple of years ago. “We had our eyes on this property because we knew it was central and it was close to another school,” Godfrey said. “It’s close to elementary schools as well and it could really be an opportunity for us to provide even better service to families.”

And it fit within the district’s budget and spending preferences.

“We have a tradition of making use of existing buildings to save taxpayers money and to get the most out of the out of those dollars,” he said.

A box store no more

Walking through you would never guess that the building, just off of Bangerter Highway in the heart of the Jordan School District, was once the home of a big box store.

“The design team has done a great job and the construction has been at the top level and it really looks great in here. … There’s a lot of space. It’s very welcoming, Godfrey said.

“It’s been a complete transformation. … We have it all fixed up to to really function very as well as a Jordan Learning Center.”

Centralizing the help at Jordan Learning Center

One of the programs that will be housed in the Jordan Learning Center is the Jordan Education Foundation.  Executive Director Mike Haynes said having a central location will help officials provide help quickly.

“Right now we’ve got four or five locations scattered throughout the district where we store some of these resources, whether it be food, clothing, beds … And it’s scattered all over. So when a school calls and says we need this, do you have it? We’re not really sure,” Haynes said.

One of the things he’s most excited about is the loading dock.

“The ability to have have donations … pull through and do drop offs. There’s been times where we we do [community camaigns] like the National Day of Service, September 11th coming up. Now, we have a place for them to come and drop it all off instead of having five or six locations throughout the district.”

The center will be located at Bangerter Highway and 9800 South. Haynes said the centralized aspect will help, rather than hinder, donations. “Easily accessible, recognizable by the coordinates, Bangerter and 9800 South – easy.”
