SALT LAKE CITY- Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall is asking for a pay raise of up to $212,000 a year.

Her spokesperson Andrew Wittenberg said that’s because she’s making less than many other city leaders across the state.

DMBA Certified Financial Planner Shane Stewart said comparing like that is very typical.

“But, then usually that comes in and it is a modest adjustment. It is not usually a large adjustment, especially if they have been in the job for a while” Stewart said.

Mayor Erin Mendenhall made $168,000 this last year. Her new budget calls for an increase of 26%, which will add an additional $44,000 a year.

Wittenberg says she is doing the work of not only a mayor, but also a city manager.

Looking at Mayor Mendenhall’s pay on “Transparent Utah” shows that she’s made about five to six percent more money each year.

The Salt Lake City Mayor is also proposing a 5% pay increase for all city employees this year.

“Of course, it is a larger city and it costs more to live there, so that could factor in especially if she she lives in the city,” Stewart said.

Stewart also mentioned Salt Lake City does have the highest cost of living of any city in the state.
