Salt Lake County votes to extend daycare funding

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake County’s council has voted to extend funding for four subsidized daycares until the end of the school year.
The county was originally expected to close the daycares at the end of 2025. However, after a lot of pushback from the public, they voted on a special proposal Monday to continue allocating the funding through the end of May to give families more time to find alternatives.
The council members who voted no, like Suzanne Harrison, said they’re glad families will get more time, but they object to closing the daycare at all.
“I just can’t in good conscience vote for this because we can do better as a county. We should have done better, given a longer runway, looked for sustainable options,” Harrison said.
The county also voted to implement incentives for daycare employees to keep them on until the programs close.
