SALT LAKE CITY — Deer are plentiful in the Beehive State. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said this time of year is prime time to conduct deer research.

DWR biologists are taking on a new form of research. The organization plans to capture deer and transport them via helicopter to different staging areas across Utah.

The staging areas include Hardware Wildlife Management Area, Oquirrh Mountains, La Sal Mountains, Pine Valley and Monroe areas.

From there, the deer will receive health checkups and GPS tracking collars and then be released back into the wild.

In addition to this project, the DWR said its biologists observe areas weekly, where they manage to look at how deer herds are doing in different parts of Utah.

Biologists compare the doe-to-buck ratios after the general-season deer hunt has ended,

Overall, and according to DWR, this research helps biologists make customized recommendations for how to manage deer in each area as well as an idea of deer wildlife survival, population growth and migration.

The research will be finished by mid-December.
