SALT LAKE CITY— Northern Utah got a brief reprieve from wildfire smoke overnight, but, more smoke is coming to the Wasatch Front Thursday afternoon and evening.

According to KSL Meteorologist Matt Johnson, a cold front and northwest wind flow will carry wildfire smoke from fires burning in the Pacific Northwest into the Wasatch Front today.

Johnson said air quality could reach the unhealthy range, just as it did Wednesday, and last into the late hours of the night.

When air quality reaches the unhealthy range, Johnson said people should consider:

  • Putting fresh air filters in cars and home air systems.
  • Using air purifiers.
  • Staying indoors.
  • Wearing a high-grade mask, like an N-95, when outside.

Johnson said the smoke should thin out a bit Friday and marginally improve the air quality, but, the smoke might not fully clear out until early next week.

You can get the latest air quality updates on the KSL Air Quality Network.
