Video: Flooding damages Nebo Loop in Payson Canyon, roadway currently “impassable”

PAYSON CANYON, Utah — Flooding continues to cause issues on roads across Utah. A new video out of the Nebo Loop shows how the influx of water has taken a toll in Payson Canyon.

Sgt. Spencer Cannon with the Utah County Sheriff’s office joins Dave and Dujanovic cohosts Dave Noriega and Debbie Dujanovic Tuesday to share some details on the damage to Nebo Loop Road.
At this time, Cannon says the road is impassible due to damage caused by flooding. He says compared to other years, the roadway has seen much more water.
“There’s a stream there that comes down from a place called Pete Winward Reservoir year round, but it’s usually just a little babbling brook,” he tells Noriega and Dujanovic. “In this case, with all the runoff, like in so many other places, it started flowing over the road and as the water went across the road, it started eroding the shoulder on the opposite side of the road.”
What happened to Nebo Loop?
Cannon goes on to explain that the flooding “ate its way” under the asphalt and continues to do so.
“I was up there twice yesterday, and when I came back about four hours after the first time … you could see there were a couple more chunks of the asphalt that had fallen down in,” he says.
Because of the damage, Cannon says the roadway will not be open for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
“People can still get up there on foot and on bicycle,” he says. “We highly recommend that they stay as far away from that particular spot as they can though.”
According to Cannon, repairs on the Nebo Loop won’t begin at least for another week.
“I spoke to the system, public works director with Utah County and he said that, uh, uh, some of the road repairs that they’re having to do in the canyons, they won’t be able to get to until the water does subside some,” he says. “He said they’re probably not going to be able to even take a look at it until about a week from now because they’re working on some issues over in Hobble Creek Canyon, similar kinds of things.”
