UHP urges drivers to slow down on bad weather days

SALT LAKE CITY — Slick and icy roads caused several crashes this morning. Police said most of the crashes were preventable, as drivers need to slow down.
Utah Highway Patrol urged people to slow down to reduce the risk of getting in an accident. UHP encouraged drivers to leave a little earlier on days with slick conditions.
“When you see whether like this — if you see any kind of weather really, but whether like this especially — slow down. There’s no reason to be in a hurry. You’re just putting yourself and everybody else in danger when you hurry in this kind of weather,” said UHP Sgt. Mike Alexander.
Alexander said drivers must be patient on days with stormy weather. Speed was a factor in many of this morning’s crashes.
“[Roads like] I-15 is a big one just because of the sheer volume of traffic that is on that road. Your canyon passes things … any kind of transition ramp from one highway to another can be treacherous. So you just have to be careful pretty much all over but in those areas in particular,” Alexander said.
In the case of an emergency, Alexander said it’s also good to pack some supplies in the car for the cold.
“Make sure they have a warm coat, maybe some gloves. If something were to happen and they’re stranded on the side of the road, they’re going to need something to keep themselves warm.”
