SALT LAKE CITY — It’s mid-December and yard work is still underway. The slow start to winter this year is allowing Utahns to continue and finish yard projects late into the year.

Utah State University Extension Horticulturist and KSL Greenhouse host Taun Beddes said yard work is usually out of the question after the first big storm of the season.

“Generally, you are done when snow flies. And it also becomes difficult to work because of the ground being frozen.”

But Beddes said the storm we had this year wasn’t quite big enough to end the work.

Yard work is keeping contractors and landscapers busy during their slower winter months.

The lack of snow and slightly above-average temperatures are keeping the ground soft and viable for projects.

Beddes said some landscapers will do snow removal or put up Christmas lights to help them earn extra cash.

“If they do snow removal, it’s really helping there because they have something else to do. But if they also install Christmas lights, it’s giving them something more to do. And so it is temporarily … giving them a bit more work than they would have otherwise.”
