SALT LAKE CITY – In a world that’s so full of chaos, meditation is essential and can be really helpful if you’re looking for a way to calm your mind.
In the latest Let’s Get Moving with Maria podcast episode, Maria Shilaos spoke with Dr. Michele Kambolis, Mind-body Health Specialist and Meditation Teacher, to learn the difference between meditation and mindfulness, as well as what you can gain from meditating on a regular basis.
Meditation may sound the same as mindfulness, but there’s a slight difference between the two.
“Meditation is a practice of entering into stillness and bringing the attention to a certain anchor or focal point. Mindfulness is the ability to be present but fully engaged with whatever we’re doing in the moment,” Dr. Kambolis said.
To get started with meditating, it’s important to make it doable for yourself because it’s not as easy as it looks. Start slow and then gradually build yourself up from there.
People’s minds are always in a busy state. Taking a moment to just sit and meditate can really help you come face to face with that.
“It also allows us to be able to see the emotions that we’re suppressing. While in time meditation can feel very peaceful and very liberating, initially we really begin to see the more uncomfortable aspects of the mind,” Dr. Kambolis said.
One of the biggest myths about meditation is that it’s an instant cure. Remember, you don’t automatically feel peaceful the moment you sit down and close your eyes. It’s important to be gentle and patient.
