OGDEN, Utah — An unfinished apartment building in Ogden has been deemed dangerous because it’s a fire hazard. Ogden City has given the building owner 30 days to solve the issue.

The building is located on historic 25th Street and is set to be a five-story apartment complex. But construction has been stopped.

The builder of the apartments did not use fire-proof wood, which is code, so now the city has given the owners 30 days to come up with a solution.

Deputy Director for Community and Economic Development Jared Johnson said the city is staying on top of the building’s owner to fix the problem quickly.

“We’re under a 30-day process now that something has to be achieved.”

City uncomfortable about Ogden apartment building

But in the meantime, the city has worries about the building because two other unfinished apartment buildings have had fires started inside them recently.

Adding to the concerns, the building is adjacent to many historical buildings on 25th Street.

“It would be detrimental. I mean there’s items down there that are historic that may not be able to be replaced if something that big was to happen.”

Johnson said they are putting extra security precautions in place.

“As of this week, we’re now requiring a live person to be onsite 24/7  monitoring it.”

Johnson said the building also has motion-activated cameras and heat sensors.
