The crash, which involved nine teenagers in an SUV, happened Tuesday near the school. Eight other students were inside the vehicle at the time, all of whom survived.
Magna city leaders have closed the dirt portion of 4100 South west of 8400 West — where the crash occurred — for the foreseeable future as authorities continue investigating what caused the accident.
Across the Granite School District, students, parents and staff are coping with heavy hearts.
“We’re heartbroken. We’re here to support our students through this,” Mae Afoa, public information officer for the district, said.
Afoa added that counselors are meeting one-on-one with students, helping them process the loss and ensuring they are ready to return to class.
“They’ll meet with one of our admins who will then evaluate the situation and just meet with them one-on-one and get them to a place that is healthy enough for them to return to school,” she said.
School leaders emphasized that their priority is supporting students as they navigate grief and begin the healing process. West Valley and Unified Police continue their investigation into the cause of the crash and will provide updates when available.
