SALT LAKE CITY — Tell me if this isn’t life imitating art. In the movie “HER” — Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with his computer.
Doesn’t hurt that the computer voice is Scarlett Johansen.
Yesterday, here in the real world, OpenAI announced a new version of ChatGPT that’s not any smarter. It’s just more human. It responds quicker and the computerized voice seems — well, you decide. Talk to your phone, tell it how to speak.
This new version of ChatGPT does instant translation. The dang thing can see! A fella points the phone at his own face, and the AI told him he looks happy.
Siri is dead. This is the replacement. It even… uhhh… says things like “uhhh” to sound more natural and human. And that’s just it. It can be a sympathetic ear after a fight with your husband. Your phone can be a buddy and you can pour out your innermost fears. And then ChatGPT will sell the data. Forget the movie “HER” — this is more like “Meghan.” The cute little doll that goes rogue and starts stabbing everybody.
My wife saw the ChatGPT demo and asked one thing. Is it time for us to get off the grid?
