LOGAN, Utah — A recount for two candidates is underway in Cache County, but it’s going on without the county clerk.

David Benson has placed himself on administrative leave while an election-related investigation continues. Two other county employees have also been placed on leave.

According to a statement from Cache County Executive David Zook, the investigation involves questions over a document filed with the Lt. Governor’s office by Benson’s office.

In the statement, Zook said the recount that is currently underway for city council races in Hyrum and Logan is unrelated to the situation involving the Cache County clerk.

“We are confident in the integrity of election results in Cache County,” Zook said in a statement. “Cache County is confident that the election process carried out by election staff has resulted in trustworthy and verifiable results.”

The office of Utah’s Lt. Governor is now conducting the recount, which was requested last week by two candidates.

“We are aware of an election-related investigation in Cache County,” said Ryan Cowley, the Director of Elections in the Lt. Governor’s office.

“The races undergoing recounts on December 13 are unrelated to this matter,” Cowley said.
