21-year-old receives cancer diagnosis weeks before wedding

On May 2nd Merkey officially started chemotherapy and his family has jumped to show their support. 

“One of my sisters got a tattoo in honor of him. I made a poster with affirmations about him that everybody that comes into the room can sign. Just in support to show him that everyone is rooting for him,” said Merkey’s sister Brooklynn. 

 

 

Brooklynn also said her brother’s ability to stay positive throughout his cancer diagnosis has been inspiring.

 

“He’s holding on and he’s pretty freaking strong with a positive attitude. I mean, like asking everyone how they are doing. He’s considered about how the nurses are doing. I mean, he’s a trooper.”

 

His sister’s wife, Taisha Martinez, who sees Merkey as a little brother, also said he’s still smiling and cracking jokes to keep spirits up.

But being positive and thoughtful is something Josh Merkey was even before the cancer diagnosis. Ashlyn Reardon, who organized the GoFundMe said he loves to surprise his fiancé with little acts of love.

“I’ll never forget the Fourth of July when he quietly snuck away and walked three miles just to bring Braylee a lemonade just because she mentioned it sounded good. That’s the kind of person Josh is,” said Reardon via GoFundMe. 

According to the GoFundMe, Merkey is expected to be in the hospital for at least a month. And the wedding has been postponed until further notice.

“He’s no longer working now. He was a mobile mechanic. So, that was how he was making his money. And the joke he keeps making is that ‘this is the most expensive hotel I’ve ever stayed in.’  You know, we wanna take that off his plate,” said Taisha.

A  GoFundMe has been set up to help with Josh Merkey’s medical bills.
