At least 100 charging stations added to the U of U after software donation

SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah is helping commuters use their electric vehicles by providing charging stations on campus.

Masood Parvania, professor and founder of Grid Elevated, said the old chargers on campus often didn’t work, so his company, along with Leaders for Clean Air and the Kiessner Foundation, donated software to help get 100 stations onto the campus.

By Tuesday afternoon, at least 60 stations were installed, and charging station use on campus had increased 400%.

Parvania said the university is one of the largest commute destinations in the state, and once all 100 stations are installed, it will have the highest concentration of chargers in the state.

“(Students and staff) love the fact that their employer or their place of work or just the school is providing an EV charging solution for them,” Parvania said. “And that’s been really refreshing across the campus.”

People tend to look at electric vehicles as a luxury, but Parvania said he believes charging stations should be treated as an amenity that could be everywhere, much like gas stations. 

“(Charging stations) should be everywhere, otherwise EVs cannot be like a mainstream,” Parvania said. “You see gas stations across every corner, right? But that should be the case (with) EV chargers. And we are providing the future of EV charging that is intelligent for the drivers and for the communities.”

Parvania said he hopes to add even more charging stations to the campus after the last 40 stations arrive within the coming months.
