CLEARFIELD, Utah — An apartment fire in Clearfield on Sunday has left four families displaced.
According to Mark Becraft, of the North Davis Fire District, when first responders arrived on scene, smoke was showing from the Lake View apartments. One of the four apartments was heavily involved with fire moving toward the roof.
In all, two units are a complete lost, according to Becraft. The other two unites are being evaluated for smoke damage.
It took authorities about hour to get the fire under control. Becraft says damage to the property is estimated at $5,000.
While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, authorities say the origin of the fire appears to be on the outside of the apartment.
Units from Weber County, Clinton, Syracuse and Layton also responded to Sunday’s fire. There were no injuries reported from Sunday’s fire.
Late Sunday, Devin Rogers, the assistant chief of police for Clearfield City, announced police had taken 23-year-old Cameron Grover into custody in connection with Sunday’s Clearfield apartment fire. He was booked into the Davis County Jail under investigation for criminal mischief for recklessly endangering human life. It’s a second-degree felony based on the amount of damage the fire caused.
Rogers also said authorities haven’t pursued arson charges because the person in question claims the fire wasn’t intentional. However, police say it was reckless.
Grover told police he went to the location the night before to visit a friend. However, the friend wasn’t at home. According to police, Grover says he lit a fire inside a shed to stay warm since he didn’t have anywhere else to go. And he failed to put out the fire when he left Sunday morning.
