SALT LAKE CITY — Three Utah communities will be getting a program this year to educate kids on military services.
Civil Air Patrol Cadet squadrons will be starting in Lehi, Brigham City and Heber. The Utah Military Academy is sponsoring the newest Civil Air Patrol Cadet squadron in Lehi. This will be the first new squadron in Utah in seven years.
First Lt. for the CAP Casey Smith said the program promotes military services among Utah’s youth.
“Three to 5% of the current cadets at the United States Airforce Academy were part of the Civil Air Patrol,” Smith said.
Smith also said the new squadron teaches kids what it’s like to be in the Air Force.
“[The kids] wear Air Force uniforms, they do color guards, they do drills just like the military would drill,” Smith said. “Which kind of teaches them the leadership and chain of command.”
Participants will receive aerospace education and join active reservists and civilian members of the military at events. Along with doing military drills, students will have the opportunity to rise up in the ranks.
