Hill Air Force Base families warned of possible child care disruptions

SALT LAKE CITY — Some families at Hill Air Force Base are preparing for major disruptions to their child care.

In a letter obtained by KSL, military families at Hill Air Force Base were warned that staffing shortages from employees opting for the federal buyouts could force the base to scale back child care operations.

The letter revealed the base may consolidate from two child care centers into just one as early as this week, potentially leaving families scrambling for alternatives.

“The message was sent to prepare families for the possibility that they may need to find alternate means of child care in the CDC East if it is indeed forced to close,” said HAFB spokesperson Kendahl Johnson.

As of Thursday, Johnson said that they haven’t gotten the official word to close.

But the letter stated it could happen as soon as this week.

When asked what happens to those families who lose their child care, Johnson said they are a priority and are already discussing alternatives with leadership.

“We don’t want to just say ‘goodbye and good luck.’ You know, we’re going to try to help them as best we can and we’re also working with leadership to see what other options there might be for potentially affected families.”
