Lomond View Elementary wins temporary reprieve as district orders independent review

OGDEN — Families in the Weber School District are celebrating after the school board voted to pause plans to close Lomond View Elementary, opting instead to bring in a third-party contractor to conduct an independent study.

The decision came after weeks of passionate pleas from parents who argued that Lomond View outperforms surrounding schools and provides a nurturing environment for their children.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the board voted unanimously to delay closure. “All in favor, say aye,” one member called out. The response: “Aye.” With that, the nearly 70-year-old school will remain open — at least for now.

Parent Michelle Jeffs called the outcome a hard-fought victory.

“This is a win. We are excited the district listened to us,” she said.

Jeffs explained that parents worked tirelessly to present data showing Lomond View’s strengths.

“We love our school, and it’s something we feel really passionate about. But we tried to approach it from a really data-driven perspective.”

District spokesperson Lane Findlay acknowledged the effort.

“The board felt like, ‘Let’s just pause, let’s look at this. Let’s bring in a third-party contractor to really dive into the numbers,'” he said, noting that transparency and trust are key to the process.

Board members even joked about the depth of research parents had compiled.

“We have commented several times about the doctoral thesis,” one member quipped, drawing laughter from the crowd.

While the board’s vote keeps Lomond View open for now, Superintendent Gina Butters cautioned that closure is not permanently off the table. The broader study will evaluate all 30 elementary schools in the district to determine which should remain open and which may eventually be consolidated.

The Superintendent noted that more data will provide clarity, calling Lomond View’s closure “likely eventual.” Still, for parents like Jeffs, Tuesday’s vote was a moment of relief.

“Independent analysis is what we need here,” she said.

For now, Lomond View’s doors will stay open — a reprieve that parents hope will become permanent.
