CACHE COUNTY, Utah — A man is in police custody after leading UHP Troopers on a high-speed chase through several counties.

The Utah Highway Patrol said they were called just after 9 PM on Wednesday night to investigate someone driving erratically.

The driver was on US-89/91, reportedly in a grey Mercedes van with Nevada plates.  Police said the driver was flashing their lights at other cars which is what caught their attention.

Police caught up with the driver on US-91 near Smithfield where he continued to drive erratically and flash his lights. Police said attempts to stop the driver were unsuccessful but that they continued their pursuit.

The driver went to the south end of Richmond where the trooper noticed the driver making a U-turn. The trooper again attempted to stop the driver, but the driver again fled southbound continuing his erratic driving, but at lower speeds. Once the Mercedes entered Smithfield again the troopers halted the pursuit.

Several police agencies as well as troopers continued to track the Mercedes as it ran red lights headed toward Logan. Later, police were contacted by another driver about a grey Mercedes driving recklessly heading northbound into Logan Canyon.

Spikes were set up by Rich County deputies near the county line, and despite successfully spiking the Mercedes, the driver continued to flee. The driver was finally stopped when a UHP trooper made a successful pit maneuver near milepost 494.

However, the driver refused to cooperate with UHP troopers.

Six hours after the initial call to police, the 31-year-old driver was finally taken into custody after a SWAT team deployed gas in the area of the driver.
