SALT LAKE CITY — “The Scamalot Fraudcast: Silly name, serious scams.” That’s the all-new, weekly podcast by the Utah Department of Commerce.
“We knew we needed to get our message out to the public about scams and fraud, and we wanted to be where the people are at,” said Patrick Fitzgibbon, communication outreach manager with the Utah Department of Commerce.
Education is part of the Utah Department of Commerce’s mission. They believe that educating the public on scams will help people feel confident while participating in the marketplace.
They also hope that it’s a way for people to educate loved ones who might be most vulnerable to scams.
“You could say, ‘Hey, my grandmother is kind of alone right now, and I think this might be a really entertaining way for her to learn about scams, to learn about what she might be dealing with or might experience — and I can easily share it with her through a text message or an email or even just going to visit and listening together,'” Fitzgibbon said.
As the holiday season approaches, you may receive stray text messages about your package that can’t be delivered, or possibly a fraudulent charity scam. To help navigate the influx of scams, the Scamalot Fraudcast will release a holiday scam episode in a few weeks.
And there’s another reason to tune in. Thanks to AI, the spelling and grammar errors that used to make scams easy to spot are now getting fixed. So it’s important to stay up to date with all the latest scam information.
