SALT LAKE CITY — The price of electricity continues to spike across the country, especially in Utah.

According to information listed on the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Electricity Data Browser, Utah had the third highest spike in energy prices in the last year, at 15.2%.

The average retail residential price for 1 kilowatt-hour of electricity went up from just shy of $0.11 to over $0.12 in the period between May 2024 and May 2025. The percent increases are calculated by subtracting the old rate from the new one, and dividing the sum by the starting rate. This is an estimate. Taxes differ from state to state.

Rocky Mountain Power provides electricity to about 3/4 of the state but other associations are used to come up with the rate increases. These include, but are not limited to, the Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS), Dixie Power, Heber Light and Power and Moon Lake Electric Association.

The rate spike in Utah is double that experienced by the U.S. as a whole. On average, the country saw a rate increase of 6.5%.

The state with the sharpest rate hike in the last year was Maine, which increased 36.38%. Connecticut residents saw their energy rate increased by 18.28%.

The future of power rates

Power bills could be even more expensive in the near future. Rocky Mountain Power proposed a 30% hike in July of 2024.  The proposal got some heavy criticism from residents and lawmakers, including Gov. Spencer Cox and House Speaker Mike Schultz.

That increase was denied by the Utah Public Service Commission and was reduced to 18%. An increase of 4.7% was eventually approved in July.

Rocky Mountain Power currently offers rates below those listed by the Electricity Data Browser has listed, at just over $.09 per kilowatt hour.
