Plan ahead, UDOT said, for weekend closure of Provo Canyon

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Transportation will close a portion of Provo Canyon this weekend to repair pavement on temporary bypass lanes near Island Beach. This closure will impact drivers traveling between Utah and Wasatch Counties.
UDOT will close U.S. Route 189 on Sunday, April 19, at 1 a.m., the department said in a press release. The highway will be closed in both directions from the Wallsburg turn-off, or Main Canyon Road, to state Route 113 in Charleston.
The department said it plans to reopen the route on Sunday, April 19, by 3 p.m.
“This is the last stretch of US-189 in this area with only one lane each way,” UDOT officials said in a press release. “When finished, US-189 will have two travel lanes in each direction from Provo to Heber City.”
For this particular stretch, UDOT will build an elevated road into the eastern hillside, which the agency said is similar to other split highways in the canyon.

The work is part of UDOT’s US -189 Improved Project which will also improve access to Deer Creek Reservoir and add wildlife fencing.
This construction project began in October of 2025, the expected completion is in the fall of 2027.
