Riverdale stabbing suspect has criminal history of domestic violence

RIVERDALE — The man accused of stabbing and killing a woman in Riverdale has a criminal history of domestic violence.

Riverdale police were called to the Greenhill Apartments after a woman was stabbed to death on Thursday night.

 

“Life-saving measures were performed, but unfortunately, they were not able to save her and she was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said Riverdale Assistant Police Chief Mike McNeely.

According to McNeely, the suspect, now identified as Scott Myers, age 39, was caught and booked into the Weber County Jail.

“The charges that he was booked on (were) for murder, domestic violence assault, aggravated assault, avoiding apprehension, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person,” McNeely said.

Suspect was known to law enforcement

Myers is no stranger to run-ins with the law. Court documents show he was convicted of assault in two instances in 2014. Both involved him holding a knife to women’s throats.

The suspect was also arrested in 2022. At that time, he was accused of driving drunk and not stopping for police after they tried to pull him over for a fight at a gas station.

Domestic violence perpetrators and criminal histories

Data from the Utah Department of Health shows nearly 40% of domestic violence perpetrators have a criminal history associated with domestic violence.

That’s why Kimmi Wolf with the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition said the situation in Riverdale was sad but not surprising. 

“The fact that this person did (allegedly) commit domestic violence, it’s not a situation that’s kind of a one-off. Domestic violence is a pattern, and with a pattern that means that likely there’s going to be future incidents,” Wolf said.

“There were many indicators that the situation could end badly,” she said.
