SALT LAKE CITY — After a 16-year-old was shot and killed on Tuesday near Ben Lomond High School, police were still searching for the shooter by Wednesday morning.
The Ogden School District said there was no active threat to students or staff after the shooting on Tuesday night, clarifying that shots were fired near 5th Street and Gramercy Avenue — a few blocks away from the school.
According to the district, the student who had been shot came to the school for help after classes had concluded for the day.
School staff, including a resource officer, tried to save the student before first responders arrived. Hours later, the school’s principal announced that despite their attempts, the student died.
Police were following up on leads Tuesday night and looking for any doorbell surveillance camera footage near the area that homeowners could offer.
Ogden School District Superintendent Luke Rasmussen spoke with KSL TV on Wednesday morning, saying the school would be staffed with an “overwhelming” amount of help, with counselors to support students and staff.
After expressing his deep condolences, Rasmussen addressed the issue of school safety, saying he’d been questioned after another troublesome event at the school recently.
“I really feel for the school now, they’ve had an unfortunate run of events,” he said. “They had a hoax bomb threat called in by a 13-year-old from Washington last week. No relation to the area or the school, but it caused an evacuation and some stress to the school and its students.”
Rasmussen further offered words of reassurance for anyone wondering whether the school was safe.
“I think one of the things I wanted to just talk about was in the darkest hour that these students have probably ever lived through — (in) a fight-or-flight response; a situation where they were involved in a shooting — the first place they came back to was … school,” he said. “They came back to their school for help and support. So I just want to thank the people that responded, it’s going to be hard on them as well.”
