Student-run thrift shop prepares to open its doors

OGDEN — A new thrift shop run by high school students is almost ready for its grand opening.
Second Flight Thrift Shop will open for the first time on Thursday at Weber Innovation High School. Its co-founders, Hudson McFarland and Conner Newton, said this is a passion project that will hopefully allow them to create a scholarship program or help pay for the business students to go to a national competition.
“It’s been a lot of work. It’s fall break right now. We came in early at, like, 7 a.m. We’ve been setting up all day,” McFarland said.

McFarland and Newton have a higher purpose for Second Flight Thrift. It will give other students access to affordable clothing and promote recycling clothes rather than shopping from fast-fashion companies. They’ll even use the shop’s profits to give back.
“The money is just going to go back into the club, so we can keep doing this and keep buying more clothes,” McFarland said. “We’re not going to make any money from it at all. We’re hoping to maybe do a scholarship program since most of us in the club are in FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). Hopefully, some of the money can go into paying for our nationals trip.”
In the shop, there will be a wide range of inventory, hopefully catering to a variety of needs. They’ve gotten clothes from donations, other thrift shops and even their own closets. There are also accessories like sunglasses available.
And as they prepare, they are learning some valuable job skills along the way.

McFarland said some products are priced as low as a couple of dollars, while some nicer items will be in the $20 to $30 range.
“We sent out a petition around the school to see who would want a thrift store in the school, and pretty much everyone voted for yes,” McFarland said. “I think it’ll be good for the kids to have more affordable fashion here.”
The opening pop-up shop is Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Innovation High School in Ogden. After opening night, it will be open for students to shop during a couple of school hours each day, and some after-school hours, as well.
