SUNSET CITY, Utah — Sunset City Mayor Howard Madsen has died. The city announced the Mayor’s death in a press release Thursday night.

“It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mayor Howard Madsen, the cherished leader of Sunset City,” the release read in part.

In the statement, Mayor Madsen was described as “the heart and soul of Sunset City.”

“His unwavering dedication, tireless commitment, and visionary leadership helped transform Sunset into the vibrant community it is today,” the statement read.

Reactions and tributes are starting to come in on social media.

On Facebook, Rep. Karen Peterson, Utah House District 13 said Mayor Madsen “had the heart of a public servant.”

“He was so dedicated to establishing the Sunset Veterans Park to honor those who had served,” she said in the post. “I am glad he saw it completed.”

Clinton Mayor, Brandon Stanger shared his thoughts calling Mayor Madsen a colleague and a friend.

“He and I had the opportunity to carpool to many meetings together. I will miss our talks and his advice on those drives. I thank him for being a mentor to me,” said Mayor Stanger on social media.

He also thanked the mayor’s family family for sharing him with the community for decades.

As of Friday morning, no cause of death for Mayor Madsen has been released.

On it’s website a message from Sunset City says, “Due to this unexpected tragedy our office will be closed until Monday, May 13th, where we will resume normal business hours 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Thank you for understanding during this difficult time.”
