SALT LAKE CITY —  Have you seen the “new, cool, thing” in license plates?  If you’ve been driving out on Utah roads, you’re sure to notice. It’s the new black license plate.

Republican District 17 State Senator Lincoln Fillmore helped push the plates into circulation. The process took over three years.

“The 2019 bill that passed wasn’t able to take effect because of Utah’s reflectivity standards. So we spent three years trying find a good solution to that problem and, ultimately, found one,” said Fillmore.

The plates needed to be partially reflective and readable by cameras. They went into production this year and were made available in July.  Since then, they’ve been a huge hit.

“Once they were available, as you can see on the roads, they just start showing up everywhere,” said Fillmore.

Originally, there was a 6-week waitlist to get them. Now it’s down to about 2-weeks. But, they are expected to stay in-demand.

“I think as we drive around the country, other states are going to look and see how cool it looks, and I think we’ll probably see some copy cats,” said Fillmore.

Proceeds from the new license plates go to the Utah State Historical Society. Since July, they’ve eared almost 2 million dollars.

The black license plates cost the same as other specialty plates. An initial cost of $25 and then $25 annually to register them.

To find out more about the new plates, check out the Division of Motor Vehicles online.
