UDOT, UTA say no projects delayed despite federal review of transportation funding

SALT LAKE CITY — Over $100 million in transportation funding in Utah is under review as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to cut back on federal spending.

The state has at least $115 million in transportation funding under review, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Utah Department of Transportation spokesperson John Gleason said this is pretty normal with a new administration.

“Federal grants aren’t anything that we depend on or plan around because you never know if you’re going to get them. It’s always nice when we do get these grants.”

Gleason said, regardless of what happens, they are in a good spot.

“The federal portion of our budget makes up just under 18%, so it’s an important but relatively smaller component.”

One project they are going forward with is the Utah Trail Network, which will connect walking and biking trails across the state.

‘Business as usual’ despite transportation funding review

Similarly, Gavin Gustafson, senior public information officer at the Utah Transit Authority, said despite the review, no projects have been delayed.

“As of right now, we’re moving forward. Business as usual. Until there’s a reason to change that, we’re moving ahead.” 

Their largest project, the Midvalley Express, has the most federal funding and is over halfway done and on ahead of schedule.

Gustafson said that he feels the review will go well.

“Transportation is such a key part of everyone’s everyday lives; it’s crucial, it’s essential. So in that vein, I think we’re fairly confident.”

No matter what happens, Gustafson feels confident the UTA will be able to change and adapt.
